Among the many inspiring speakers and guests at the recent Empowering Women Conference in Mullingar, I had the pleasure of meeting two outstanding Irish sportswomen: Gráinne Walsh and Anna McGann.
Gráinne Walsh has represented Ireland at the highest level in boxing, including the Olympic Games, and has earned international recognition through her dedication, resilience and success in the ring. Her journey from local sport to the world stage demonstrates what can be achieved through determination and perseverance.
Anna McGann is an Irish international rugby player who has represented Ireland in both rugby sevens and the senior women's team. Having also excelled in hockey before pursuing rugby, she embodies versatility, commitment and the willingness to embrace new challenges in pursuit of excellence.
What struck me most was not only their sporting achievements, but also the resilience both women have shown throughout their careers. Female athletes have often had to work harder for the same recognition, opportunities and resources afforded to many of their male counterparts. Progress has not always come quickly, and barriers that should never have existed have taken years to dismantle.
Yet athletes such as Gráinne Walsh and Anna McGann have helped drive that change. Through their performances, professionalism and determination, they have contributed to a sporting landscape where the gap between men's and women's sport is gradually narrowing. While there is still work to be done, today's generation of female athletes is competing in an environment that is more visible, more supported and more respected than ever before.
Both athletes serve as powerful role models for young women and girls across Ireland. Their achievements remind us that success in sport is built on hard work, self-belief and perseverance. Just as importantly, their careers demonstrate how individual excellence can help create wider opportunities for those who follow. Through their example, they continue to inspire the next generation to participate, compete and realise their own potential, both on and off the field of play.
This version keeps the focus on their achievements while acknowledging the wider challenges faced by women in sport and the positive progress that is being made.
