Willie Rooney

Willie Rooney (1873–1901) was a passionate Irish nationalist, journalist, poet, and a committed figure in the Gaelic Revival. Born in Dublin, he became deeply involved in promoting Irish language, culture, and identity at a time of growing national consciousness. As a co-founder of the Celtic Literary Society and an active member of early nationalist movements, Rooney used both his writing and organisational work to inspire pride in Ireland’s heritage. Though his life was short, his influence endured, and he is remembered as one of the youthful voices that helped shape modern Irish cultural nationalism. This gathering, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, honours his lasting contribution and the people who came together to celebrate his legacy.

The photos below were taken on 10th May, 2024 at 23 Leinster Avenue, off North Strand in Dublin 3. The Dublin City Council plaque marks the residence where the poet, journalist, and Gaelic revivalist lived and died.

Unfortunately, I do not know all the names of everyone in attendance,  but they are a mixture of members of the extended Rooney family, friends, dignitaries and other interested onlookers. Please feel free to download any image for any non-commercial use.
